Deadheading and Pruning: Maximizing Dahlia Blooms
To promote a plentiful display of blooms, it is essential to regularly deadhead these plants by removing spent flowers. This practice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your garden out also redirects the organism's energy towards producing new blooms instead of seeds. Using sharp scissors or pruning shears, cut the flower stem just above the first set of leaves to encourage healthy growth.
In addition to deadheading, effective pruning methods can significantly influence bloom production. Pruning back excessive foliage improves air circulation and light penetration, which are crucial for 'the overall health of the plants. This practice fosters a vibrant and flourishing garden throughout the season.
If you are wanting to collect seeds from flowers for the following season you simply let the seed heads remain on the plants not cutting the flowers once they're done blooming and allow them to form and dry. You will know that they are ready when they are papery. Bring them inside and allow them to fully dry before breaking them apart to find the individual seats. Store the seats through the winter in a cool dry place until you're ready to use them again in the spring.
